Like the others say, she could just be teething. If her poo is normal (just more of it) then don't worry. Leave the nappies off as much as possible - lay her down on a couple of folded towels, use water to clean her, pat it dry with a towel. Baby poo is really easy to get off towels: wipe what you can, and rinse the rest off with the shower. Then just wash with normal washing.

If it smells like diarrhoea, and you've ruled out things like infections, teething, cold etc; you could try going over the things you've been eating/drinking last couple of days. Any medication? Alcohol/ nicotine/ coffee? I had to completely abstain from red wine, coffee and salmon when my son was younger, as having any of those things resulted in toxic nappies a few hours afterwards!

Has anybody tried introducing formula or mashed foods into her diet? Anything other than breast milk or water, basically. It can cause all sorts of allergies in babies. Carry on breastfeeding, look after yourself and don't listen to those who tell you to give up or switch to formula.

Good luck, hope your daughter feels better soon!

Change diapers frequently - at least every two hours in newborns. You can space this out as baby starts to urinate less often.
Change poopy diapers right away - this is a lot of trouble at first since newborns often have small, frequent stools. This will slow down as baby grows.
Try different brands - if using disposables, another brand may fit a little better and cause less friction.
Rinse cloth diapers - add a half-cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. This helps remove alkaline irritants. Your diaper service can also do this.
Wipe well - be sure to wipe all the stool and urine away.
Use unscented wipes or just plain water - these are less irritating. You can even rinse out the wipes with water, although this takes more time.
Diaper rash cream - some lucky babies don't need any. More sensitive bottoms need cream with each new diaper. There are two basic types of barrier creams:
Petroleum ointment (Original A & D ointment) - this is an excellent preventative every-day ointment. It's less sticky and less messy.
White zinc oxide - this is thicker and may be better for babies who are more prone to rash.
I used A and D ointment to prevent diaper rash from occuring. Just make sure her bottom is dry before applying. The ointment will keep the urine from her skin.
I do feel for you...diaper rash is no fun for either the mother or child.

It is actually very normal for breast fed babies to poo regularly, several times per day. I am shocked that she would only normally go every other day. The best way to get rid of diaper rash is to give her a bath, then let her lay on a towel or blanket for a couple of hours without her diaper. You need to treat this so that it doesn't become an infection. Also, instead of baby wipes, use water and a clean cloth for each change, or just bathe her each time. It's important that her bottom stays clean and dry. You might give her a bit of Tylenol to help with the pain in the mean time. Good luck to you.

PS Ignore the person who said to change her to formula. That's outrageous--breast milk is 100% better than formula for the baby, and the rash has nothing to do with it.

If it is at least 12 times a day and has a foul smell, it may be diarrhea. If not, then it could be an allergy to something in your diet. This is a frequent cause of diaper (nappy) rash, as the food goes out the other end...

If you have started eating something that you weren't earlier, this is a likely culprit. Even if you have *increased* the amount of one particular food in your diet, this could cause an allergic reaction. (Think, in particular, about seasonal fruits.) Otherwise, dairy is the most common allergen in young babies. Try eliminating all dairy (including "hidden dairy"--any food with whey, casein, or an ingredient with "lact" in it) for *at least* 2 weeks to determine if this is the problem.

Another possibility is thrush. If your daughter has raised white dots inside her mouth (tongue, inside of cheeks, gums), this is the cause. If she cries as if in pain a couple of minutes after the start of many feedings, thrush is also likely. If you suddenly have sore nipples, it is also probably thrush. This would usually produce a red bumpy diaper rash, sometimes with a yeasty smell.

If you have thrush, both you and your baby need to be treated at the same time--even if you have no symptoms. Talk to a family doctor, if possible, as she/he can treat the two of you. Or read the articles in the sources section below for more information.

My son just had 2 teeth come in and all the while he had runny pants and a really bad rash, it is normal(well not the rash but the runny pants). If the rash gets really bad let her sit in a cool bath and lay around without her diper and when you go to wrap her back slather on the Desitin. She should be better in a few days.

Has she been wanting to chew on things? Sometimes when a baby is starting to teethe they will poop more and get a diaper rash. I always keep my son's diapers changed and I knew something was up when he was getting a diaper rash. Try using baby Orajel, or some other kind of numbing gel for babies, Infant Tylenol and Hyland's Teething tablets. The tablets are all natural and they disolve in baby's mouth.

Hiya,
you have had many answers to your q but when my son has a bad rash I tend to use metanium, a yellow cream that you apply thinly to the affected area and it works within hours.
It can be bought from any UK chemist.
If you have just started weaning her onto solids, this can also cause tummy upsets, or she may have just picked up a bug, like many kids do nowadays!
Plain boiled water is often good if she is refusing a feed and to prevent her getting dehydrated
good luck

could be that she is teething, try 'anbesol' for her gums you can get it from boots. keep on with the breastfeeding i fed all mine till they had teeth and it is a huge comfort, breastfeeding can also sort out bad tummy's so please don't think about putting her on to a bottle, but if the crying continues, i used to walk my little one around in a sling, cause she could hear my heartbeat. please remember it is only a phase, my kiddies are now 12,9 and 4, and we are all still around to tell the story. hope this is of some help to you, and well done for still feeding her to 5 months, some people only do it for a few days or not at all, so you have given her a brilliant start in her life. WELL DONE YOU!

She could be teething. Also try to remember what you are eating, it could be upsetting her tummy.
A warm bath and change the pee diapers as soon as they are wet. Baby or talc powder to dry the rash out.

She will be OK...make sure she is drinking plenty of water or pedialyte to make up for all that she is loosing. She could get dehydrated fast.

Does she have the runs?? Try diaper rash creams and a lot of baths. Is it a yeast infection? Antifungal foot creams are the best rash treatment.
