I mean who is she playing, although who plays the role is also interesting. She was apparently working for CBS at the time of the McCarthy hearings, and it might have been Ella Fitzgerald, but I'm betting it was someone pretty famous. The actress/singer who plays her does a good job, making her very mellow and not too sexy, as would have been the case on 50's TV. But given that she seems to be in a sound-only studio, she may have been just a voice, not a picture, on the TV at the time. Do you know who that was?

The singer is Dianne Reeves. The movie has her credited as just "jazz singer." She is not representing any particular singer; just singing in the style of that day. She has a great voice. The links below give a little information on Dianne Reeves and her role in the movie.
