not me - I want 10 points. Was that a trick question? This site is so addicting. Sometimes I want to stop, but can't. don't know why.

Here I am, being the "straight woman" in the comedy team, acting as if you meant something (who knows what) by your question.

There definitely are people on this site that do not care about points, and in fact throw points away. Arguably, anyone asking a -- ahem -- pointless question is throwing away five points. Mostly what the point system does is indicate what is valuable to the program as a whole: ten points for a best answer is to indicate that you should take questions seriously and answer the best you can. Up to one hundred points possible for thumbs up confirmations of a best answer also makes that -- can't avoid the pun -- point. It costs five points to ask a question for the corresponding reason: we need many answers for each question, and we definitely do NOT need stupid or pointless questions, let alone ones that violate community guidelines.

I'm at level 7, and last I looked, had something like 34,500 points. I obviously do not need to worry about spending five. But I still limit my questions to things I actually want to know, because the point system informs me that this is the way to improve the site.

And it is worth improving, it is worth protecting from trolls that would destroy it. We are participating in an unprecedented opportunity to communicate globally, and to exchange information, ideas and opinions with the entire English-speaking world. And click on those little flags at the bottom of the page to speak to people in any other language you are likely to know. It's a heady experience, and I'm proud to be a part of it.

And yes, I do get a kick out of being chosen best answer.

You giving me 10 points means I wouldn't have to exercise my fingers trying to get five lots of 2 points. What do you think I am? Lazy? ;o)

Not really, if they 'd lead to something uber amazing yeah, but at the end all you get is more access to questions in this place so... count me out!

Gamespot.com's user point/level system is awesome since you get to do more stuff in the site that require certain levels, like starting a union, uploading videos, etc etc!
