Ok, so I have somehow managed to change my keyboard settings. It now thinks I have an American stylie keyboard, when in fact I have a British layout. This is very, very annoying as I can no longer type a British 'pound' sign, and the @ button can be reached through 'shift' and '2'! Please, ANYONE, can you help?

P.S I have tried the control panel thingy and also the F1/F2 at the start-up, to no avail!

Ice princess beat me to it! she has given you the best most concise answer on how to fix the problem in a windows based operating system. good luck.
once you have added the UK style keyboard remeber to set it to default all from the same section that ice princess told you about. now don not remove the us keyboard layout and settings as some programs and websites require this to be available (if i'm remebering correctly, no need to correct me if it turns out i'm wrong) in order to work efficiently even though you are not using the us settings.

go to control panel > option regional options > click on languages > then click on the details button. In the top drop down arrow list select your keyboard layout.

Hi, to fix.

Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options. Then change the first drop downbox to English (United Kingdom). You'll need to reset your computer and all will be well.. :)

so you went into the BIOS? and made sure of the keyboard.
you went into CP and set region?
you didn't specify, but i'll assume Windows XP?

Control panel regional
languages details
default input language
and make sure the keyboard matches.
