Once they win, they belong to American Idol's label. They have to do whatever dorky crap is asked of them, like singing on Ford commercials. Everything comes at a price. It's part of the contract.

I don't think they sell out. This is all part of their contract. Ford sponsored the show, which is why Taylor is singing on their commercial. They also made Ford commercial with more contestants during the show itself.
I'm sure American Idol has a nice long contract with the winners. They won't just let them win and slip away.

Just remember, they are under a contract, sometimes they have no choice but to sell out. And if you are talking about the lame ford commercials, Ford is the big sponsor of American Idol.

They have to play the game to even become a finalist. So really they sold out before they got on the show for the chance of becoming famous. Is that really selling out? I think it is grasping the opportunity.

If you think wanting to strike while the iron is hot, and make lots of money, before the world forgets who you are is pathetic... You need to rethink your position. It's the smart thing to do. Make it while the makin' is good. Make hay while the sun shines. etc, etc, etc.
