the same Mysterious Island as in Jules Verne's Mysterious Island, with a VERY strong power source, possibly based on designs of Rambaldi (sp?).
At least 2 groups of companies want the power.
different groups think they are the good guys, and everybody else is the bad guys.

its obviously purgatory. Everyone has done something bad in their lives, but are not horrible people so how they act on island determins if they'll go to heaven or hell.
However think writers may not even know whats going on anymore, keep bringing in stupid new story lines and not answering old ones, should have just finished after 2 seasons rather than dragging it out like this

DONT READ THIS IF U HAVE NOT SEEN THE LAST EP IN SEASON 2
ok so u decided to read it.
firstly:
they said it was geologically unique explaning many part,
similar to how the northern lights are gelogically unique,
second:
the whole experiment thing is understanable as if man found such a geologically unique area there would be testing and it could go wrong.
thirdly:
due to its popularity they have extended to another series,
u can see how they changed the plot.
ie. personally i belive in the last ep they world was ment to blow up would have made a lot more sense.

Lost is a CRAP show. They don't know how to end it or make it more interesting. The writers are Lost. The first season was good but the second makes you loose a little part of you life every time you watch it. You will never get your time back. KILL LOST Fof F*** Sake.

Well I wonder if it's a "Bermuda Triangle" sort of place. The magnetic fields may have pulled the plane down, and balloon/smugglers plane etc. Though I am with the idea the writers are just going along day by day making it up!

I think it's mostly a manifestation of fears, doubts, and dreams of the inhabitants (remember the polar bear?). It has brought people of all different backgrounds together and shown them their capabilities and their limits, sort of a test imho.
Interesting take from Bex.

I think that when they had the plane crash they all got stuck on limbo, and now they're past lives are coming back to haunt them and they must face them or suffer for the rest of eternity!! its pretty pessimistic, lol.
