i would say horses are equal to dogs, but the smartness is a different kind. they know how to get out of different situations and they know how to learn tricks and how to please humans, and dogs know how to hunt and obey humans and be loyal and trustworthy. a horse is less known to guard a human from attack.

and i do have a horse, his name is Harley, he is almost 3 and he is a saddlebred/QAuarter horse mix breed.

I don't know if there's really an answer to that question. Horses have feelings, like we do, but they only have a short term memory of 4 seconds. Dogs are great at sniffing things out, and seem to have a good memory.

I do have an answer to the second question, though. My horse's name is Jimmy, and he's a Quarter Horse. :-)

AS a rule, I think dogs may be more intelligent. But then again ...

My horses:

Peaches - grade sorrel mare
Raindance - Appaloosa mare, chestnut and white
Dudes Shasta Star — Appaloosa mare, dark bay/brown with snowflakes
Dreamin' Bout Straw — Shasta's filly, same color
Banjo — buckskin paint miniature gelding
Chance - silver dapple miniature gelding
Scrappy — brown dapple hinny (cross between a horse stallion and a jenny donkey - a mule is a cross between a jack stud and a horse mare).

I think horses are smarter than dogs. I have both but choose the horse because of their emotional intelligence. They have the ability to mirror you and help you work through problems (Equine facilitated psychotherapy).

I think that since their instincts are different, dogs are predators and horses are prey their way of thinking is different yet at the same time very similar. If that makes any sense.
My horses name's are:
Vanity- Paint
Dillon- Paint
Cowboy- Appaloosa

i would say they are equally smart because they can handle situations differently. while horses are more of a prey animal they tend to be flighty, or scare very easily. and dogs are more of a predator they are not as scared. i consider them both smart.

i have 4 horses:
MaDane=thorughbred
Hollywood=quarter horse
baby=quarter horse
donnie=mustang

Horses and dogs are equally smart though, sometimes they don't act like it!
I have a saddlebred/foxtrotter cross named Lory
