Yes, Michigan is in deep trouble. There is no middle class anymore. I'm unemployed, but highly educated and well-accomplished in my field. Over the last three months of looking I've received one firm job offer, from Meijer, for overnite stocker. $6.25/hr, 39 hrs./wk. doesn't cut it when a decent (safe) apartment runs $800-$1000/mo. We have the 2nd highest cigarette tax in the country (world?), insanely expensive mandatory car insurance that technically covers no-one for anything, insanely high prices (my Dad's Comcast bill is about $160/mo.) Like a parasite on a host, the rich will eventually kill-off the poor - and then where will they turn? No one left to pay the cigarette tax, play the lottery, live in the apartments THEY own etc. There needs to be a balance between throngs of people making $36/hr at Delphi, and everyone else making $6.25/hr. at Meijer. Natural economic forces are making the corrections, but not quickly enough for people like me and millions like me.

Michigan's economy will bounce back, providing DeVos doesn't get in. His quick fix to turn it into a service industry is nightmare, as he is not for the working person, he is only for business making profits, which means low wages for those working. Which means that people will be working 2 jobs just to make ends meet. This is our President turning this into a third world country, no middle class. It will take about 6 years to turn this economy around the way it is going. We need strong unions, to protect the rights of workers, not just supply entire shifts with temporaries, & without any benefits or incentives to keep them working. United We Stand.

Well, technically, many areas of Michigan are doing good. The Grand Rapids area unemployment rate is around the national average. There is a lot of development going on in Grand Rapids as well.
