My children grew up (or they thought they did) moved out and then did come home, but the rules changed, they had a certain amount of time they could stay and they had responsibilities at my house (both in the home and financially) they left because it was time. When children never want to leave after coming home its because the parents make it to easy for them to stay.

This is a different world than when you grew up. Youth are not taught accountability and responsibility. They frequently do not know how to save money at all, or balance a checkbook. They think a debit card can be used whether you have money or not and they try to have all the stuff their parents have immediately and go into insurmountable debt to pay for it and they can't. As a result they lose most or all of it and there only recourse is to head home again. Then the parents compound the problem by agreeing to let them stay for as long as they want for free. They do not hold them accountable for their actions.

When I left home I was able to buy a house for $19,500. Now they are too expensive. Lots of kids go back home because they can't afford an apartment or a house and save the money to get one. I know one married couple who lived in her mother's basement for a year and put $25,000 away for a down payment on a home. Some parents charge the kids rent and put the money into an IRA. Two of my friend's kids came home because they were working and going to graduate school, which they paid for themselves. College tutition is proportionally much greater than when I went to graduate school. I don't think anyone who is an adult should live at home and not either pay rent or be putting all the money they save away either to save for a place to live, for graduate school or for an IRA. It should not be used to live high on the hog or to buy a fancy car.

We were taught to earn what we had, pay for what was necessary, and take care of the important things. Today, kids have everything given to them, and they don't understand responsibility until the get out of the house, and realize they aren't prepared for the real life..
