My 6 month old throws horrible tantrums, he has quite the temper. When he has these fits I cannot get him to calm down. But, once my mother takes him he stops crying and smiles at me. Am I doing something wrong? Why can't I get him to stop crying when he is like this and she can. It makes me feel horrible.

do you get tense and upset while he's doing it? if you do then he is sensing your anxiety and its making his own worse. where as your mother has been there, done that, knows that it isn't the end of the world and is calm about the whole situation.

watch the tantrum thing though, at 6 months he's starting to cry just to see how fast he can make you jump and you do NOT want to start a trend that teaches him that he gets rewarded for bad behavior. if you do you'll have a real monster on your hands at 2. and yes what he learns now will influence his behavior later.

i know it sounds horrible but if you know he's ok, not hungry, not sick, is in a safe spot and doesn't need changed it would do him some good to learn to calm himself down just every once in a while. then you pick him up and give him attention when he STOPS fussing, thereby teaching him that bad behavior won't be rewarded but good behavior will. also don't forget how easy it is to distract babies, simply directing his attention somewhere else will often make him forget what he was bitchin about in the first place. you know the difference between and honestly distressed cry and an i'm just doing this to see what happens cry.

I bet it does. My little one used to do that, he is now 10 months. All you got to do is be calm and sing to him or distract him in some way like show him, himself in the mirrow. Make funny noises, funny faces and try the singing thing. But if he gets to bad then just leave him in his cot for a few mins and then go back to him and be all happy and loving towards him. I bet you are a great mum, maybe he can feel that you are worried about him and he plays on that. Just try things to distract him and make him happy again. Good Luck

It could be that your Mom is calm when she takes him and he feels at ease with her. You need to be calm when you hold him and not get upset when you are trying to calm him. Babbies can sense when your upset. So, if you just stay calm and be patient with him he will feel at ease and calm down for you. Good luck and just be calm and keep trying.
