What do you need a partition for?

Are you trying to make space on the drive to install Linux?

If that is the case, you can do it another way for free (without Partition Magic).

1) Backup all of your data on your drive in case something goes wrong.

2) Defragment your hard drive completely. It make take more than one defragmentation. See instructions below.

3) Follow the tutorial below on downloading and burning an Ubuntu live CD.

4) Then boot from the live CD and use the "install" icon to start the installation. Follow the instructions carefully! It will shrink your NTFS partition to make room for Ubuntu Linux.

If you want to parition your drive for another reason, you can buy Partition Magic, or use Knoppix, a free tool listed below. Search google for tutorials on how to partition your drive with Knoppix.

Always back up your data before you try to partition your drive.

You cannot create partitions in Windows after it is installed unless you have un-partitioned space on your hard drive. If you do have space right click on My Computer, go to Manage, and click on Disk Management. This is where you can set up your free space as another or several partitions. Otherwise you need to get a third party product like Partition Magic. If you mean during the initial install of XP, when it asks you where to install and the size of the partition, just change the size to a smaller number which will leave you free space after the install is done. By default Windows uses the entire drive space available for C:. After the install is complete you can create partitions like I mentioned earlier.

Forget buying Partition Magic - Windows has the tools to do it and doesn't cost a thing.

If you are installing Windows XP, it will automatically ask if you want to partition your drive as you go through the process. If it's already installed, you can go to Start > Control Panel and choose Administrative Tools. Then go to Computer Management. Once you open Computer Management, click Disk Management on the left. This will allow you to create and manage your partitions and unpartitioned space.

I will agree that partition CAN be a dangerous thing, but using Computer Management, you cannot screw up your active Windows parition.

Please, do not press anything! Partition management is very dangerous to those who do not know exactly what they do.
