Never use a whip on your horse or any horse. It's unnecessary to begin with and cruel as well. If your horse is your partner, and well trained, he's going to race his/her heart out for you.

I'm grateful there are Professional Trainers like, Monty Roberts who are trying to have whips outlawed!

My mom has had some experience in barrel racing, and the truth is, if you have a good connection with your horse, a whip isn't really necessary. Because barrel racing involves balance, and an intimate communication with your horse, quick reflects and an acute sense of attention, the whip should only be a small reminder for the horse. Never use a whip in anger; instead, use it only as if you were whispering in the horses ear. Practice makes perfect, but guide the horse with your leg muscles, and a tight rein. The whip isn't entirely needed:)

If you've trained your horse properly, it'll go as fast as it can for the sheer pleasure of it. Pro barrel racers never "whip" their horses, even though you see them seem do it. They're using the whip as a signal for the horse to GO, and not trying to cause any pain. In horse racing, this is know as "Showing them the whip".

i would say maybe during training, but not in competitions. the horse should want to do barrels, he should have fun. if hes not having fun he probably wont go fast. i think of a whip as a correctional tool, so no i would not use it in competition. However, if in training or practicing, he stops responding to your body or verbal cues, then i would say its time to get out the whip and remind him that he is supposed to go when you kick him.

Only use the whip if the horse refuses to listen, and just give a light tap when using it. For example, if you put pressure on the horse's side with your leg, and he doesn't respond to it, tap him with the whip, to reinforce your leg. Praise him afterword if he responds in the correct way.

I agree with every one here Your horse should want to do barrels because it loves. My horse likes barrels she is just really lazy so I use gentle spurs just for encouragement to go faster. I got her going as fast as she could go and we still got a 46 second run lol she is so slow lol.

in case you quite pick to get aggressive I propose no longer pushing your 15 y/o any better than she is raring to bypass. She ought to turn on you, i have realized from journey. you do not ought to promote her, you could take her to some ranch gymkhanas and win ordinary awards on her. As for her age, 15 isn't undesirable. the way you understand if a horse is purely too previous is the way they act. in the journey that they act like they're 7 even as they're 15 it truly is sweet. in the journey that they act 20 even as they're 15, it truly is a difficulty. I actual have finished NBHA on a 26 y/o one eyed ex %. QH, we received extremely lots, yet it truly is because he did not act 26. i have received sortings on a 33 y/o QH. He acted 11. It purely relies upon on your horse. i'd propose protecting it ordinary including your 15 y/o. enter into competitions that are low-key and interesting. it truly is in case you pick to keep your horse. in case you quite pick to win and are wanting to get into enormous institutions like extreme college Rodeo or Little Britches, getting a sparkling youthful swifter horse is one in each and every of the right ingredient to do.
