I'm trying to reduce budget. I know the products that cost thousands... but I'm looking for starting out low budget stuff... I'm aware of pro tools... but it costs too much money....

GO TO "MUSICIAN'S FRIEND" and get the 800 number. Call they and ask for tech support . they will tell U what you need and ask what price range you R in . You will need either a KORG cassette 4-track recorder, about $200 or A KORG 4-track digital recorder, about $350..

Tascam also makes in-expensive stuff for around $100.

Home studio, as you know, can be very expensive. Something you will need to consider first, is your home quiet? What about when the a/c or the heater comes on? You'll need a very quiet place, away from busy streets, trains, and other loud noises that could bleed in from outside, and on your recording. Unless you won't be recording with microphones, then you'll either need to spend money soundproofing (if that'll work, usually it don't) or find another place to live. Also consider this...most of your instruments can be played on a versatile keyboard, except maybe guitar, and still make a good quality recording. But to be honest, with the music industry, you get what you paid for. If you want something sounding very professional, you've either going to have to go to another studio, or spend the money. Best of luck to you.........

You'll need more than that. I'd start with lining a room walls with cardboard egg crates, giving it some sort of 'acoustics'. From there, you can buy a 24 track analog recorder, cords and the mics for them--or go all out and buy digital.

Work with the basics--go around the expensive stuff, the materials needed are all around you. Work with what's there, what's cheap--and make some discoveries with sound.
