My sister is 3 months pregnant. Yesterday she had to be admitted in the hospital for excessive nausea and vomiting. Is this normal in a pregnancy? If not, what can be the cause? Is it dangerous for the baby or the mother? Please explain in detail,

This condition is known as :”Hyperemesis Gravidarum” i.e, excessive vomiting in pregnancy. This can be confused with nausea and vomiting due to other causes like gastroenteritis, the chances are however rare, except in the developing countries where infectious diseases are still very common.

Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is attributed to the rising levels of HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropoin) , a hormone produced by the placenta. The levels of this hormone increase starting from early preganacy, reach their peak at about 10th week of pregnancy and taper of by the 12-14th week. So the morning sickness is typically seen in the first three months of pregnancy and very rarely later than that.

You sister my be having an increased sensitivity to HCG, or there are many other causes. Like Twin pregnancy where the placenta is larger and produced more HCG. A hyaditiform mole of the placenta can also cause this or more grave choriocarcinoma.

The risks for the mother are dehydration and disturbed water and electrolyte balance therefore hospital admission is necessary. For the baby there are no direct risks, however the risks come from the general ill health of mother due to dehydration.

I have a friend who was vomiting everything she ate and she learned that she was pregnant with twin boys! Although vomiting is normal, when it is excessive there is a chance that the mother-to-be can become dehydrated which is not good for her or the baby. She can have a condition called Hyperemesis gravidarum, which affects a small percentage of pregnant women. This sends 50, 000 women to the hospital every year. When properly treated the mother and baby should be ok. So she did the right thing by going to the doctor.

I had extreme morning sickness in my first trimester. I had alot of cramping and slight bleeding with it. It is normal, it's just some women are different. I was told it would be hard for me to carry a child but I am now in my 37th week with my daughter. Just have her take it easy, don't lift anything, and before she gets out of bed try eating some plain unsalted popcorn. It helped me. I stayed sick for the first four months. I know how she feels. God bless here with the life inside

i had it up until i delivered my baby. the reason she was admitted was probably do to dehydration. tell her to keep hydrated and ask her doc to prescribe her the meds to stop it. my doc gave them to me. they may help.
