The duo separated in the 1980s due to creative differences. Their new movie,"Cheech and Chong Get Blunt," scripted by Rae Dawn Chong is still in the works.

Maybe something to do with "Born in East LA" which was the movie Cheech did without Chong.. and Chong has expressed bitterness over it on interviews etc.
Though I'm not sure.

"Creative differeences"...translated to "both guys had opposing directions neither wanted to give up". When such a creative "tug-of-war" happens, the rope binding the two as a team breaks....and they spit.....and keep drifting apart.
