I would say that if they don't understand the importance of geography it's probably because they don't see the importance of the rest of the world.
It's best to put things into perspective. Compare the size of the U.S. to the rest of the world to start. Next you might show them the size of past empires, Rome, China's, Alexander's, Genghis Khan's.
Finally tell them that if all they know is their own backyard, that's as far as they can go.

Learning geography is the gateway to learning of different cultures. Nobody can experience every different culture first hand. Learning geography is the closest most of us will ever get to expieriencing certain places. It's extremely important to understand that there are many people in this world, and they have many dif beliefs, customes, opinions, etc.

Well, with kids, you have to probably make it as relevant as possible to them. Maybe use oil as example: with more people in China starting to drive, the demand for oil increases; OPEC nations also controls the supplies to ensure maximum profit, and all these things have impact on how much they pay at the pump. Also talk about the fact that the world is becoming smaller and smaller. So, what goes on in one country affects the other, i.e., natural resources, demography, etc. of one country is not just limited to that country anymore. In the US, there are people from many different countries. It's nice to know something about each country, so one can relate to everyone. (Good way to pick up cute girls/boys from another country.) But, the most important one is that understanding geography, for me, help to understand that people are basically products of our environment, and no one race is better than another.

It is important so you can be familiar with the world that you live in. In my opinion, it might be the MOST important subject there is to learn. If you don't know anything about your world, you are going to make no positive contribution to our world.

yea... i would basically ask them something like if they know the name of the street they live in, the state and country they live in, or the names of any of the continents...
if they dont know any of these... then you could talk about the importance of geography.
