Research in resilience indicates that even if ONE teacher takes a special interest in a high risk student (behaviorally and academically), that student seems to become a more responsible learner. Most successful people in the world trace back their success to (usually) ONE special teacher who touched and changed their lives.

Absolutely!
A teacher who goes beyond their expected 8-4 and really connects with a child~ someone who knows how to reach and appreciate that child's values~ for a child who comes from a less than perfect environment, abuse and such....that teacher may be that child's only safe haven and can make them believe in themselves~ focus on their strong points and help with the things that need work. Yes a teacher CAN make a world of difference.

When I started teaching I made it my mission to get to know every single child on a personal level in my room. I have to say it has been a success. When teachers take the time to know and love students, it is the most rewarding experience a teacher and a student can share. I hope that my students will look back on me as someone who made a difference.

Yes, but parents are much more important.

I was royally screwed up by my childhood... but I did have one teacher whose caring and belief in me kept me from suicide as a teenager (thank you, you wonderful lady!).

Teachers make a huge difference in their students' lives, for better or worse. However, parents have infinitely more impact.

Yes, but the family influence is even more important. So guess what? If your lucky enough to have parents who teach, your probably going to turn out well.
