I've lived in Spokane for 17 years. Moved from Chicago suburbs and it was quite a change. Much slower pace of life here. Very conservative, military and small-minded town. We were snubbed by neighbors for 5 years because we moved here from another state. They don't like "outsiders" especially from California, where they think the devil lives, or something. Lots of Mormans. The city itself is small enough to get from one end to the other in about 20 minutes, unless you're going out to the Valley- that's east of town and really spread out. The cost of living used to be lower here to make up for the pathetic wages, but lately, the cost of everything has skyrocketed. Housing is incredibly expensive now compared to when we moved here. We, of course, had our little scandal with the mayor, and I'm surprised that nobody answered yet that that's what they've heard about Spokane. That and our serial killer (Robert Yates- he killed prostitutes for years) Anyway, it's a small city wanting to be a small town, but it's too late for that now and it seems like it just doesn't want to grow up and face the issues that confront it- like crime, gangs, a city council that never seems to get anything constructive done, homeless people, the working poor, dropouts, you name it. We've got it all- Next to Nature- Next to Perfect. (our motto)

Who hasn't heard of it? I'm not a big fan of eastern Washington having lived in western Washington all my life, but of all the places to the east (the east being anything over the pass), Wenatchee and Spokane are the two best places.

I've heard that it doesn't rain there as much as it does in Seattle, although Spokane does get dreary in the winter. (A former colleague hailed from Spokane, and I have an open invitation to visit whenever I want.)

That is SUCKS and there isn't much going on there! Of course Gonzaga is in Spokane and that's about all that city has going for it. I'd stick with western WA, much better! Eastern WA is flat and is just farm land. If you want excitement stay in Western WA!

Hot, very conservative, boring city in Eastern part of the state. Most recent claim to fame is ultra conservative christian gay hating mayor caught cruising young men on internet and even giving male sex partners jobs in his administration. Pretty much says it all. Stick to Western WA unless you are a conservative, small minded, hating person then by all means go to Spokane, better yet, keep driving to Idaho.

Well, I lived there for 6 years. It is generally a nice place to live, but they have alot of "petty" crime there. Otherwise, I wish I could move back there. The weather is very nice and mild there, and it does not rain alot, like Seattle. Bloomsday and Riverfront Park are especially awesome parts of Spokane, and things that I miss where I live now. Here are a couple links: http://www.spokaneriverfrontpark.com/

Good luck!

I lived there for seven (loooong) years and I agree with the answerer who said it's a small city that wants to be a small town. There's a smalltown mindset despite the 200,000 person population and it seems to keep the city from making some of the improvements that they need (a north-south freeway, for example.) It's far more conservative than Seattle, which was my biggest complaint (there I was a left-wing freak, here in Seattle I'm a moderate!) The weather is more extreme (much hotter in the summer, much colder and snowier in the winter.)

It is now the second largest city in WA - between Seattle and Tacoma - and it snows in the winter and is about 100 degrees inthe summer. It's pretty much hicksville.
