One of the reasons why people become intolerant and prejudiced about others is because they don't spend TIME to get to know them. People rather rely on their misconceptions and use their own distorted view of others affect their feelings, thoughts and actions. So, one way to promote tolerance and reduce prejudice is by providing time and opportunities for people to become better acquainted with one another. Friendship does wonders...! There is no short-cut to a harmonious living among people!

That's a toughie. Living in NY it's a very tolerant place, and is probably because of how many people live here. Even where I live in the mid-hudson valley, racial, ethnic and sexual acceptance. The one group that still has the most problems is the gay community, but even they have it not so bad here as in other places.
I think that the best way for more acceptance is living in close proximity to people with other ideas. Here in the US we need to promote our differences instead of keeping seperations. Homosexuals need to be allowed marital rights, seperate but equil civil unions just won't cut it. The bigoted elements of our society need to be called out on their bigotry. When a person tries to use any reason to call another wrong, or sinful or whatever they use to cover their bigotry we need to tell them how wrong they are.
It might be a hard thing to do, but every time you see a person you know who uses the words, *** ger, fa g, sp ic, dyke, Jew, or any other bigoted word you have to call them out on their haenousness.

Start with the media - a man or woman who robs a bank is just that - not a black or white man/black or white woman, just people. For the media to describe race in their journalism either pro or con is performing a great injustice to their readers by keeping the prejudice and lack of tolerance alive and well daily.

Simple ways, is helping at volunteer areas, other easily done things are when with friends try out forgein things, such as make marokkan food, or put on african music, and learn the spanish salsa, and not only do it yourself but get others to do it.
Bigger things, such as making people aware of things going on is fundraisers, commercials, work with your locan community centers for such things since your most likely not the only one wanting todo this.

Nothing. People who have prejudices can't be changed, its hard-wired into them. Time is the only thing that can change such a person, sorry.

Make sure that the school kids grow up with friends of all race, creed and color and that the parents don't bad mouth other people at home. The children learn what they're taught to as they grow up.
