Separation usually means you are living apart but still have time to reconsider and to reconcile if both parties wish but, you are still legally married. It's the pre-divorce stage where, if reconciliation is not an option, folks really start to fight over who gets the expensive silver service Gramma Gilly gave you as a wedding gift, how you are going to split up the furniture, who gets to stay in the house/apartment and who moves out. It's also the stage where you look at your spouse with complete disgust and wonder what the hell you ever saw in him/her.
Divorce means you are no longer legally married and someone is now paying alimony and child support. It's also the stage where, if both parties calm down and act like civil human beings, you can actually be friends (sort of).
Best to stay single and avoid it all or do what I did. Didn't divorce him; just keep him in the closet.

Divorced involves paperwork and divides up the possesions (even kids) between the two people. Seperated is similar, but doesnt involve division of possesions. its kinda like taking a break in a marrage.
