...Divorce means a JUDGE has signed the order granting the divorce. You aren't divorced just because you and your spouse sign the papers. Separated refers to living apart.
Separation usually means you are living apart but still have time to reconsider and to reconcile if both parties wish but, you are still legally married. It's the pre-divorce stage where, if reconciliation is not an option, folks really start to fight over who gets the expensive silver service Gramma Gilly gave you as a wedding gift, how you are going to split up the furniture, who gets to stay in the house/apartment and who moves out. It's also the stage where you look at your spouse with complete disgust and wonder what the hell you ever saw in him/her.
Divorce means you are no longer legally married and someone is now paying alimony and child support. It's also the stage where, if both parties calm down and act like civil human beings, you can actually be friends (sort of).
Best to stay single and avoid it all or do what I did. Didn't divorce him; just keep him in the closet.

Divorced means "not married anymore."
Separated, the couple is still married, but not living together. Separation can be informal, or it can be a legal precursor to divorce. Some couples separate and then decide they don't want to get a divorce and wind up back together. That's why the state exists - so people don't make life-altering decisions without having time to think it over. (In a way, it's similar to an engagement before a marriage, just on the opposite side of the spectrum.)

Divorce is the official dissolution of a legal marriage.Separated people are still legally married. In some states you can get what is called a legal separation. It usually involves a court order declaring that a couple are no longer living together, and that issues regarding children, financial support, and personal property have been resolved---with the exception of marital status. I think also that a spouse doesn't bear any financial responsibility to any debt that is accrued by the other spouse when they are separated. Not 100% sure of that one, though.
Obviously separated people cannot go out and marry someone else since they are already married. For some people it is impossible to get divorced--religious reasons or whatnot--so separating is an option. In the eyes of the state they are still in a legal union, but financially and personally they are not together.

Both can be legally undertaken. Separated is for a fixed period of time, and is not anywhere near as final as divorce. The goal of a legal separation is to give the couple time to seek reconciliation, but to make the path to divorce easier if ultimately it cannot be worked out.

Divorced involves paperwork and divides up the possesions (even kids) between the two people. Seperated is similar, but doesnt involve division of possesions. its kinda like taking a break in a marrage.

Divorce means that you and your spouse have signed documents saying we no longer wish to be married to each other and seperation is like breaking up with your boyfriend. You can see someone else by our own free will. Seperating is also like drifting apart and evetunally breaking things off with that person
