did he want to or did they force him to.

How do you figure 40 goals last year is winding down... (screwy)

As he said in interviews, he felt like he wasn't apart of Detroit's plans anymore. The Rangers are up and coming if they can get a healthy Jagr next year with Shanahan in the lineup they will definitely have good 1st and 2nd scoring lines.

And I doubt he "needs" money. As far as forcing him to go, they wouldn't have offered him a contract if they wanted him out.

The Red Wings in the '05-'06 season were one of the best teams in the league. Though they dropped their first series in the playoffs, they were dominant throughout the season. Now that the season is over though, you have a brand new team ahead of them - Stevey Y is gone, no offer has been made to Manny Legace, and who knows how much longer an old many like Brendan is going to be around.

Going to the Rangers puts him in an even bigger limelight than when he was out in Hockeytown. The Rangers were a few parts short of really making a run for it last year, and perhaps he figures that he might be one of those missing parts. In Brendan the Rangers get a goal scorer (to take the heat off of Jagr), and they get a veteran all-star who will be able to lead the younger guys both on and off of the ice.

Robert B, how do you figure? The Rangers' offer was less than the two leading teams interested in him.

As a Ranger fan, I was very disheartened to hear this news, because it seems like a step backward from the "rebuilding" philosophy that worked so well this past season. But the more I think about it, it's not like the old days really, because they didn't throw a ton of money at him, and they only signed him for one year. It's one less spot for a hungry "kid" but maybe they do need another veteran influence.

I like Shanahan and I think he knows Detroit is not going to be that strong this year and maybe the Rangers have a better chance of winning it all.

He is getting near the end of his career and may have just wanted to get more money like everyone else is doing.

He is still the best power forward in the League, natural leader and winner of Stanley Cup. Best at PP in front of the net with Jagr up front potent, now with the addition of Matt Cullen who came into his own in the playoffs for carolina and of Course Lundqvist in nets the team looks promising.

Don't forget the rangers made the playoffs first time in while last year did not get past first round but played solid hockey. With Gklen Sather as former Oilers GM that built their dynasty he may end up with another cup in broadway.

He has spent 7 years there and for Detroit it frees up salary(Even though they offered him more money in the with the increased cap space) for a high calibre goalie which they clearly need.Maybe Biron from Buffalo.

He wanted to. He turned down equal or greater offers from Detroit and Montreal. I think he should have ended his career in Detroit. The Rangers will not be going anywhere next season.

So much for the Rangers Youth Movement.

Detroit saw it coming with free agency and he knew he could make more money elsewhere. The Rangers were the highest bidder as usual....At least we got a great 10 years from him.

i think he left becuz the team is not the same now that stevie y retired. his wife probably had influenced his decision. maybe he got tired of first round losses. maybe he just wanted to play somewhere elsewhere he can help win another cup. will he help new york? i don't know. the extra money the team has left should sign young players and a better goalie besides belfour.
