Our door from the house to our garage opens on it's own. It will not catch on the latch when you try to close it. It' s a pain as it is always opening on it's own and we have to close it. Any suggestions or repair help?

all it is, is the air current pushing against the door. You could replace the door along with the frame and screws. In one of my old houses. Our door that lead from the house to the breezeway (garage) kept opening. Finally we just got used to it.

Look very closely at the latch bolt that protrudes out of the side of the door. Slowly close the door and watch the latch bolt enter the door jamb. Take a pencil and mark the door molding at the top and bottom of the latch bolt. Open the door and notice if your marks are above or below the latch plate hole on the door jamb.

If this a small amount, above or below, try tightening all of the hinge screws.

If the is a larger amount, take off the latch plate an reattatch it to where the latch bolt enters it as close to center as possible. You may have to take out a small piece of the jamb so that the latch plate hole doesn't have wood behind it.

The right way: Take the trim off from around the door. Adjust the door jamb so that it is square and has the same amount of gap around the door. Put the trim back on around the door, and fix and paint any scratches, scars or dents.

Good Luck

You have foundation problems most likely. Aside from kitchen matches, or a shoring company, you can remove the trim from the door. Back out screws holding door frame to house framing. Cut any nails with a sawz-all. Then re-install door. Start on the side with the hinges, plumb from bottom up. level across the top. Plumb down the side with the latch. Use shims behind all fasteners. Re-install trim. It's really easy after you've done a couple of hundred doors. Most armatures mess it up the first time, so go easy on the fasteners until you're sure it's right.

Sounds like the striker plate on the door frame may be recessed too much. I had a door that did the same thing. I put a couple of small washers behind the striker plate and the door closed and latched fine.

Next step is changing the door knob assembly to one with a longer bolt coming out of it.

The easiest way is to remove one of the hinges and bring it down to the hardware store. Match it up to a spring hinge style that matches the original hinge, round or square edge. Easy !
Then work on the strike to catch. Can't see from here to tell ya

Check the top hinge, sometimes the screws can come loose. Tighten them or install a longer screw to catch the framing of the wall should fix, maybe.

tighten the screws in the top hinge. also if you install a long 2.5" or 3" screw in one of the screw holes into the jamb that might help also. good luck!
