A person always had his hands with him & that was used before our current way of measuring was standardized.

because when we started colonizing and using horses more often, the standard of measurment was our bodies. we did not carry around rulers and yardsticks and measuring tape. after a while though, people started using different words like a yard for the armspan, etc etc. them metricd came along and everyone got confused, so we do measure in hands now, BUT i dont know anyone who actually measures their horse with hands, everyone takes measuring tape and then converts it to hands, which is 4 in= 1 hand.
can you imagine saying my horse is 5 feet tall!!
or my hosre is 60 Inches talll
it would be weird

A hand is four inches, the average span of your hand, measured from knuckle to knuckle.

Coz they never had tape measures in the 1200s.AD, ha ha. A 'Yard, is from your shoulder to your wrist, an inch is from the bend of your thumb to the nail.....................

Simply because, most people had hands so you didn't need a rule, and it was easy for people to do.
