Wow, this is going to be a fun question to answer. Conservatives have several reasons that they have no objections to the amount of money (among other things) that is being poured into Iraq. (in no particular order) Conservatives are about money, power, and position...if they show support for a fellow conservatives initiative then they expect some kind of personal gain in return. Also, I believe that as Iraq changed its currency backing for the fuel trade from the U.S. dollar to the Euro the U.S. which practically dominates the international oil market with the U.S. dollar became anxious that other nations in the middle east would follow suit (as Iran began to)...That would deal a serious blow to the U.S. financially...the top money men who invested in the fuel market (conservative) have a definite influence on the conservative political agenda.....Next reason, conservatives feel like they have to appear more patriotic than others...(Note the "Patriot Act"...it passed because of the freaking name...it wasn't even fully read...democrats at fault too on that one) If the nation is headed for a fight they don't think about am I fighting for America...they think about fighting to put on a display of love for america...i've seen what I'm sure were conservatives pickup trucks with a support the troops sticker alongside a confederate flag sticker...and as far as national security, who provides the initiative for people to pour into this country illegaly by outrageous numbers, any of whom could be here to attack us...who tried to slip a deal by the american people to hand over a port which is a big factor in national security to a nation that the FBI concluded provided funds for the terror network that attacked us on 9/11

Because, the federal government does not have any Constitutional rights to manage the health, education, and socialist programs that the Congress has enacted through out the years. Also, the total money spent on the military is at an all time low compared to the GDP and to Federal spending. It once was about 50% of federal spending it is now around 20% and dropping each year. I would rather see all of the socialist programs, education, and health be given over to the states and the local communities. Education should be given back to the community and opened up to stiff competition on teaching our children right now we are a laughing stock when it comes to literacy among most of the industrial countries of the world. Keep Social Security and Medicare but reduce most of the other programs from a Federal standpoint and allow people to spend more of their own money. Neither conservatives nor liberals give a rats *** about the average person they only care about staying in comfy jobs.

Its not a matter of how much gets spent on those areas that we differ its who's in charge of that spending and were it comes from the Conservative movement believes in the Constitution and the Federal government staying out of peoples way that's not to say all government so if you live in example A and want millions to go to education and cops that's fine but people in example B should be able to decide how they live their lives as for Iraq that's were the Constitution asks all states to bind together its a national issue
basically this Conservative is just for less micromanaging buy the Federal guys which has been a fight this country has been in from the start for example the Articles of confederation vs. the Constitution or the civil war were the south claimed the battle was over states rights so remember when people argue for smaller government ask which one Federal state county or city and nowadays neighborhood associations.

Spending in the Middle East IS investing in Americans, it is investing on Americans lives in the form of National Security.
I have yet to see Republicans reluctant to put money into education and the like. To poor that money into programs that are failing before reforming them is pointless though.

You are comparing increases in our country to almost none at all there. When the entire world has health, education and social programs we will all benefit from more peace and less frustration, fighting and terrorism. People in Iraq have so little that they don't even value life.

you have it all wrong.
Conservatives do not oppose spending on education, police, etc.,. What we oppose is over spending on good programs. In California, the state spends more on education than any other state yet we are ranked in the bottom 10 states for education performance. More $ do not equal better service. The same goes for all public services. Social programs have proved detrimental to the very people they are supposed to help. Welfare keeps the low income folks dependent on big government. If I could get paid to sit around drinking beer and making babies I probably would too. Not only do they pay for this but they used to penalize the welfare recipients for getting married, so not only did they get paid for sitting on their butts and not contributing to society, but they were encouraged to break up the family unit.
Conservatives aren't evil, desiring to hurt society, we want to call every individual to contribute to society, to be responsible for themselves, to have some pride for their lives. If you want to name some hypocrites, let's study Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who literally preach racial bias and hatred against whites. This allows them to gain the favor of the Democratic party leadership who in turn continue swelling these programs that are doing harm to their race. If you ask me, this is the ultimate in racism. I get a mental picture of the Democratic minority leader patting the head of a nappy headed bum on the capitol steps as he hands him a dollar and asks him to promise to vote for him in the next election. It ticks me off to no end.

Because their president wants them to do so. And the power of a sitting president is fantastic when applied to the career of a member of congress. The Prez can go a very long way in helping your district/state...Or, he can hose you if he wishes.
