I can't believe some of the things that my 10 year old niece talks about...she is aware of things that I hadn't thought about until I was much older. Is the media to blame?

With the internet, the walls are gone, and anybody and everybody is opened up to such a large world. Also, over time, generation by generation, more things become socially acceptable. Primarily though, it is environment. Many children who grow up quickly do so as a response to an environment in which they are required to be more responsible, accountable, and are involved in many activities. Being in that kind of situation requires the discipline of an adult.

They do grow up much faster, as far as what they are aware of at younger ages than we were. However, even though they know things at an earlier age, when they become young adults, 21 and up, they are sometimes helpless. Example: When I was 18 and graduated high school I couldn't wait to get out on my own. Nowadays you practically have to shove them out of the nest.
