Robb:
It really depends what you are doing with your machine, what os you are using, and how much memory you have stuffed in it, and what grade of games you play.
If you are a surfer and all you want to do is watch viral videos, it will be just fine, if you are a mega gamer, then you will want to upgrade to a better card, though some cards now require you to upgrade your power supply to use them, do you have an agp slot or not? It will make a difference in the card type you get.
What grade of processor are you running, if it is like a celeron no matter what vid card you are running it will not play the top end games.

Pretty much anything is better than that, plus it takes system resources too. I'd use the GeForce (not GeoForce) 5200. You won't be playing FEAR with it, but it could do FarCry or Doom 3 with a lot of stuff turned off.
That said, if you're surfing the net and just typing papers then the Intel Extreme is just fine.

You don't need a separate video card, but it depends on what you want to do. If you are gaming it is better to have a separate card. If you're not it probably won't matter. Also remember that onboard video uses up memory because part of your RAM will be dedicated (shared) to your onboard graphics adapter.
