ok here's the deal.. picking up after yourself should start shortly after your kids can walk . since your kids are older, then u need to be confident that their bedrooms are set up in a manner that can be maintained by the kids i.e. everything is within their reach and it is fairly easy to put things away. try not to be picky about how they put their stuff away; that is usually the problem parents encounter with this kind of thing- not only do they want the room picked up they also want it picked up ONE way... gotta give the kids some choice / power too.
if all else fails remove their bedroom door; hence NO privacy .. they will clean their room

Kids should start picking up and putting away their own toys at age 1. They should be fully capable of cleaning their own room, without supervision by age 4. By age 5 or 6, they should be skilled enough to make their own bed, unassisted.
If you have been picking up after them and cleaning their rooms for them, you can't expect them to all of a sudden just start doing it. You have to talk them about it. Tell them, specifically, what you expect. For instance: all books back on the shelf, bed made, closet organized. Whatever expectations you have must be made clear.
You will get poor results if you simply say, "clean your room."

properly, dont lead them to do any significant cleansing, yet like putting there own toys away and dirty clothing away like you reported- is high quality. do merely it for a short quantities of time 5-7 minutes tops. and also you reported your daughter does compared to doing it, attempt setting up a advantages equipment in. tell both between the twins (reason it does not be honest if in ordinary words one were given a advantages) whats up! you want some sweet, a clean recreation, bypass to the park, and so on what ever they prefer (small issues) then tell them spend 5-7 minutes cleansing up, and also you will get this, and praise them once they are executed.

My little ones are three and six and they can clean their rooms; they usually don't but they can. Sometimes I go in and start throwing stuff away. That usually gets them to hurry up and put away everything that they care about and I throw out the other junk and ta-da the rooms are clean.

Well mom, who trained your daughters since day 1? They should have been cleaning their own rooms long before now.

my brother had to start cleaning his room at the age of 4. i mean, sure it was just picking up toys and putting them where they belong. but he learned early.

too lazy? i'd say that you are the 'lazy' one who has failed to teach your kids to clean up and whatever else. you're the one who needs to be 'embarrassed' over how badly you've done with your kids! it's been up to you from the begining to teach and train your kids, with love, not shaming, how to clean, etc. i hope your kids emarass the heck out of you some day for your inexcuseable neglect and visciousness for wanting to embarrass them! you make me sick!
