Hiccups are caused by involuntary spasms of the diaphram against the lungs.

A scare tricks your brain into producing a tiny bit of adrenaline which tenses the diaphram alittle. If its tense, it cannot spasm.

Think of yourself as an animal. Every animal has survival instincts. If you are strangling yourself with your own hands, your bodie's reaction due to lack of oxygen to the brain is to pass out. If suffer a traumatic event like a car wreck and you are in intense pain your mind shuts down and sometimes you lose consciousness. You lose consciousness because in your mind, it believes that you or your actions are causing the pain. Therefore, it renders you helpless to prevent further damage to your person. It is a simplified logic. Easy to perform in a short period of time. Therefore, if something unexpected were to occur like say a...I don't know...a savage dog were chasing you and you were trying to hide then hiccups would give you a way. Simply, your mind stops all diagnostic, trivial, and otherwise brain occupying functions and makes survival functions highest priority process for the brain to computate.
