I dropped a heavy board on my toe nail, proximal to the nail is a whiter area that is deeper than the nail is. Is this the matrix - where the nail is formed? Do I need to see a specialist before it totally comes off?? It bled quite a bit when it first happened.

Nail growth begins in the Matrix. The Matrix is a bed where special skin cells (keratinocites) form the nail plate. Damage to the Matrix can cause permanent deformity, and can even cause the nail to stop growing completely.

But that usually does not happen. Its better to keep the old nail on unless an infection develops.

If you still are having a lot of pain, there could be a chance that you fractured a bone.

The long and short of it is that only you can decide how badly you injured yourself. A quick stop at your regular doctor and he should be able to tell you whats what. But more then likely, you'll be fine.

A new nail will grow in by itself usually. I'd leave the old nail there to protect your toe unless it's causing a lot of discomfort. The old nail will come loose when there is enough new nail growing up under it. If you are at the point where you have new nail that has formed and the old nail won't come off easily, soak your feet in very warm water until the nail softens and try to gently pull it loose. If you can't get it off yourself and it's still bothering you I'd see a doctor.

You're lucky it bled! Otherwise it would have been more painful from the pressure of the clot. When did you do it? If it was more than a week ago & there is no infection, don't worry about it. It will gradually grow out. You can keep it trimmed. The white area is the place where nail grows out from the bone.

I would soke my foot in hot water( as hot as you can stand it) add salt to the water. This will take the soreness out. Keep it clean. If the nail doesnt just come off soon go to see a doctor.
