Progress has been limited so far. NASA did sponsor small scale grants in a contest to develop a nano-tube that could support a certain weight.

I don't believe objectives of the grant were fulfilled. Read from the link to learn more.

Though the concept is sound and would revolutionize our ability to access space.

Given the lack of vision in NASA which has lost the spirit of innovation that it had in the Apollo years and when the space shuttle was first initiated I would say we must wait many decades, if not a century or more to see this come to light.

But keep dreaming - and keep studying science!

I think they're still "researching" the idea. I've read a few magazine articles about it over the past couple of years, and they always say they're still in design phases, that sort of thing.

it has gone back to theory, due to the lack of strength of the carbon nanotubes that were to be constructed and used.
