For one thing, in those days of music, the band "lived it". They wrote and completely performed their own songs. Now you have so many people who just sing, no writing or playing, or "bands" that were put together by some rich corporate dude. It removes the soul of the music.

Because the artists back then (my generation) poured more thought and meaning into their music. It wasn't just all about the words or the beat. It was about a blend of both. The words to songs had to fit the music and vice versa. You have to remember the Sixties and Seventies were turbulent times and music artists wanted to make a statement.
