Not all aging bodies are painfilled. My mother and father inlaw are both in their 80's and doing quite well. I believe that is what people are hoping for not just old age but old age with reasonable health.

The aging body does have its moments of pain and things don't always work the way they used to, but we want to live a long time because we have worked very hard all our lives and want to enjoy the fruit of our labor. We also want to be with our loved ones and to help them any way we can. The human body is really is strong enough to cope with pain and still function dependently. I'm 60, have arthritis and acid reflux, have had breast cancer, a hysterectomy, wear bi-focals and still goin' strong! I climb ladders, get on the roof to trim branches, paint walls using different techniques, lift up to 50 lbs., do my own housework, climb on the creek bank (all large rocks) to pull weeds and decorate spaces with my 'gnome garden' figures. All boils down to staying active and loving life. Know this is long, but hoped it answered some of your question. P.S. I am not afraid to die because I know there is an afterlife. But while I'm here, I'm gonna enjoy it to the max!

There is much more to life than physical comfort. I'd endure any amount of discomfort in order to be here on this beautiful earth watching my family grow, watching spring come, listening to my favorite songs, smelling the ocean, etc. I live in lots of pain and it's not what I'd wish for, but life is sure worth it.

it probably seems like it is because these people fear death, but it's not or they would be concerned about being immortal and not just living longer.
The reason why people want to live longer is because it's common knowledge amongst elderly people that you work your butt off your whole life and retire with bad health low energy and a few bucks to expereince life with. if you can live longer you can also experience life more fully when you do retire..just ask the baby boomers.

For some people, their enjoyment of life outweighs the discomfort or pain of a deteriorating body.

The main reason is that they are afraid to die. Even the greatest of self professed Christians still doubts what is waiting for us after death. Therefore, even pain is preferable to the unknown.
