Quite possibly these were Pacing Wires. They could be connected to an external pace maker if you experienced heart rhythm irregularities postoperatively. I assume that the wires were removed within a day or two of the surgery.

I'm a cardiac surgery ICU nurse. It is a temporary pacing wires. All patient undergoing open heart surgery has this pacing wires inserted during surgery because post operatively cardiac arrhythmias are expected. With the presence of temporay pacing wires it is easy to just attached it to a pacemaker box in case patient experiences cardiac rhythm abnormalities, usually bradycardia, asystole, atrial fibrillation, heart blocks. Now a days there are only 2 pacemaker wires being inserted. It is being removed few days after once the condition of the patient permits. Sometimes it is pulled out on the day of discharge (few hours before).
