I've been playing bass for around 8 months, I'm doing pretty good for 8 months. I have just now discovered there are pedals for a bass guitar. But I don't really know how it would sound, and i don't want to waste money on something that I don't know how it sounds, these things are expensive. I'm in a band, kind of heavy metal. So does anyone recommend a pedal this and what kind of pedal.

it's up to you. but here's a little help. look in music mags for interviews of *your* favorite bassists...the one *you* think has the best sound. the artist usually tells what equipment he uses...worked for me.

I think Chris Squire -- bassist for Yes -- used some distortion. I always thought he was a great bassist, great sound (he actually used *chords* on base....a real musician, huh?)

Oh yea...good music shops will always let you try out a pedal before you buy it. That sure saved me some $ I tell you.

hope this helps

I've been playing bass for years. To me, I wouldn't recommend a distortion for your bass. The bass and the drums have to carry the bottom end of the music, and you don't want to compromise that. Although it would seem cool, it's easy to get caught up with the distortion and effects things on bass, then pretty soon all your music will sound alike (in my opinion). But then the decision is yours. Some more advice I can give you is to be as versatile as you can on bass. Don't limit your playing style to just one genre. As you practice, you'll get better, and possibly be invited to be in other bands...and you'll need that versatility. Don't limit yourself. Best of luck to you...........
