Get a router. Linksys is my preference, but there are a number of good ones out there. You hook up the DSL to the router uplink(the network port by itself) using the network cable that came with the DSL modem(this is a crossover cable and different from normal network cables). If the router is near your computer, you can use the 6 foot piece which comes with the router to go from one of the (presumably) four ports which are side by side on the back of the router. You can buy a network cable, or make one with the right equipment(probably not recommended for you if you are asking this question). Make sure that it is long enough that you don't have tension at either the computer or router end of the cable. Once plugged up and powered up, open up your web browser and type 192.168.1.1, which is the "web address"(really the ip address) of the router. Newer routers may partially or completely autoconfigure the dsl modems, but a lot of them don't. You will be prompted to log onto the router, but you do not need to enter a username, only a password which is "admin" by defaut on a linksys router. On this screen, you will need to check and see if "WAN Connection Type" is set to read PPPOE, which is the dsl connection type. Once it says so, look near the top of the window and select STATUS. If you see disconnected beside status(in the status window), click on the CONNECT button below the status display. Once you do this, you should be online. You will also enjoy much better security behind this device, in addition to what you should already have from your dsl box. Good luck and enjoy.

The only other option would be wireless. You can purchase a wireless router. A LinkSYS or whatever, the computer in the basement however, needs a wireless modem. The DSL Portal will connect to the wireless router via ethernet cable, you will be able to connect another ethernet cable from the Wireless router to your computer upstairs. I'm using a similair setup, however I have laptops so wireless modems were no problem to get.

The easiest way is to use wireless networking. For example, on a Mac OSX machine, you'll see that in the Sharing control panel, you can share your connection from ethernet over airport. Assuming you and your housemat each have an airport or wireless card, you'll be all set.
The other possibility is to buy a wireless router, which would also work. The buddy in the basement still needs a wireless card, though.
Lastly, there are some wired options, but they still require a router, and I'm guessing you don't want to run ethernet cable down there. (unless you just want to hang it out the window and don't care about appearance)
Whether you do wireless or not, something to look at is these adapters that send data over the AC wiring. They can be used to extend wireless coverage, or just take the place of conventional ethernet wiring.

Get a wireless router, go to a place to talk to someone like a radio shack or a best buy, or depending on your DSL call the company to get one. I am running my Internet through a wireless router.

hi robit, just got done with a guy that is having the same problem now i can tell you to get a new modem that is for that then i can tell you to get a new router and an adaptor to make me sound like i know what i am doing and beleive robit i am very adanced in pc repair but i am not going to do it because if i give advice i want something that i can beleive that i am helping you if i can. what i would do is and this is what we did is call our local dialup connection and they brought in another modem and it cost us twenty bucks a month. it just don't work i worked for a week before i called my internet provider and tech an i worked for two days before we all gave up. of course they covered themselves by blaming my computer but called a computer repairman and he said that he could not find nothing wrong. so before you spend the kind of money that we did think wouldn't it be better to get something that you know will work? at least before you spent the money you got some outstanding advice. but then who am i gave people advice before and they didn't listen to me so good luck hope i was helpful to you. hope you don't ignore words of wisdom

Use a Gateway for your computers.... A gateway is a box that connects to the DSL provider... and all of your computers hook to it... that is what I run.. and it works good!
equipment will vary depending upon your provider.
