I know you can't wear pads in the pool but I've never put in a tampon and my virginal efforts to do so just resulted in me being stressed out and standing in a room with several wasted tampons. The sites I read said that I should "relax" before putting it in but... I'm a virgin blindly shoving things up my vagina. I don't think it's physically possible for me to relax in that scenario. My swimming class is entering its last week and I really can't take days off for my period.

Also, please don't tell me any of that "Your period stops when you're in the water" because that just isn't -true-.

I don't know if I was trying to put them in wrong? They're the sort with the applicator and the directions didn't specify if the applicator went -in- me or just near the opening. I'm incredibly confused and there really isn't an option to skip the class. Can anyone help?

I used to be a competitive swimmer and i could not use a tampon until i was about 19 (after I had sex) because I would get light headed if I even tried - it isn't physically possible to force a tampon into you without breaking your hymen (the piece of skin that makes you "virginal") which is obviously painful for most girls. Relaxing won't make it go in any easier, and there isn't any one angle or applicator that will make it easier (when you do start using them, they usually guide themselves in no matter which way you "point" it).
Anyways, back when I swam, I would just not wear anything with my bathing suit. I know this may sounds gross but if anything did come out, i would be submerged in water and it's unnoticeable. Some other girls I swam with would wear two bathingsuits - which seems dumb, but whatever works for them. My advice is, don't worry about it, just go to the classes, it's not like you will be in your bathingsuit ALL day.

the best way to put it in is to make sure you're not completely dry down there, friction is your enemy at this point. use a smaller tampon and imagine the tampon making a straight line to your middle back. thats where you are aiming. "relax" the muscle that you use to stop or start urine flow. imagine just letting it all gush. thats the relaxed feeling the sites are talking about. put the applicator inside as far as you can while keeping a firm grip with finger and thumb on the base of it without squishing the applicator. your finger and thumb should be touching your body or super close to touching. then push the little plunger into the applicator, which pushes the tampon inside of your body. lightly pull on the string a little bit if its uncomfortable. if it feels like its pushing against your insides at all its in the wrong position.

tampons just may not be your thing. you could also try to get an appointment with a doctor for some birth control pills and they will tell you which pills to take to delay or skip your period.

Do you have a mom you can talk to about this?

Yes, the applicator goes in. It typically has a plunger on the end and you insert it until you get to the plunger section and then press the plunger in to push the tampon out. Find the smallest, most slender tampon you can (there are some on the market that are for "teens" and that might be best for you). It helps if you sit down -- that makes access easier and relaxing easier. Don't stress out, though -- it's not going to hurt and as soon as you do it the first time, it'll be a cinch from then on!

The applicator does get inserted. Get a tampon that has a plastic applicator. The cardboard applicators may be more difficult for you to insert if you can't relax. If you still have trouble inserting the plastic applicator, try lubricating is with a very, very thin layer of Vaseline or K-Y Jelly. One you get the applicator inserted, push the plunger up while holding the applicator still. Once you've accomplished inserting one, you shouldn't have anymore problems, because you'll see how painless and easy it really is.

i was you about 6 months ago.
it was so hard for me to put in a tampon until i realized that i had to.
what really helped me the first time was to put a mirror on the ground so i could actually see what i was doing.
then just shove it up. there is really no other way to do it.
your vagina is right in the middle all of your other "holes" are too small for a tampon so dont worry about hitting the right one.
after all the frustration that i had built up about putting one in, i realized that it was super easy and i didn't even feel it after it was already in.
it is a skill that takes practice but soon you will get the hang of it.

if at first you don't succeed... keep trying until you don't bleed!

you may have chosen the wrong size tampon for yourself . . they do come in varying sizes for mild, medium and heavy flows . . being a virgin and using a tampon have nothing to with each other . . additionally, use a tampon that comes with a soft plastic applicator (not cardboard), it will make it easier and make sure you insert it completely - that could also be part of the problem
