I have come very close several times. The first time that I tried I had the gun to my temple and was about to pull the trigger. My finger was tight. At that moment a ray of moon light hit my class ring. It was beautiful, the way the stone lit up. I knew if I pulled the trigger I would never see something that beautiful again. Now that I have a child and a wife, I could never cause them the pain that I have seen others (in psych groups) cause their family. I just keep looking for the beautiful small things like light on a stone.

I survived a suicide attempt, not suicide, obviously. It was many, many years ago.
My first thought was "Damn!"
It has changed my life in that, very shortly after, the problems that had seemed insurmountable were gone, and new ones had taken their place.
I will never again attempt suicide for emotional reasons, as depression can be treated, and now I know that I can overcome anything. (I do, however, think I might do it for intractable pain and a condition causing it that will be fatal anyway.)

I survived my father's suicide which occurred on New Year's Eve, 1951. He took his shot gun and shot himself in the chest so he would not mess up his open casket. Whatever gene affects mental health was passed on to me. His only sister later walked into a pond to drown herself. His mother, my grandmother, was a frequent companion to Our Lady of Peace Psychiatric Hospital and had numerous shock treatments and a great uncle was institutionalized at a state Hospital for a while.
