When my husband and I were returning form our honeymoon we noticed that people who had bottles of rum had their bottles opened and poored into another bottle that contained something that looked like treebark in it. What was it and why did the customs officer do this?

It seemed like the customs agent was testing for something - like cocain. Every bottle of rum that went through customs was opened and part of it was poured into another bottle.

That is mamajuana. I had some taken from me when I got to Canada. I guess it is illegal. But you are supposed to put rum in it and let it sit for a few days and then pour half out and put more rum in it or something. I am surprised that the customs official did that there.

Mamajuana is an afrodisiac

Just another person with the same info...

My wife and I were in Santo Domingo in February of this year.

"Mamajuana" - Delicious! I brought back a couple of bottles myself. I don't think there's anything illegal about it. I could be mistaken, but I was told that it had red wine, honey, rum and wood/bark. Really delicious. In fact, your posting is going to talk me into a little swig when I get home this evening. ;-)

I'm not Dominican, but I enjoy that country!
