There have been about 4,000 launches since the first satellite, but some have put more than one satellite in space. Also, some satellites have come down. So there are a few thousand, more or less.

Lots, and no exact number can be given as new natural satellites are frequently being discovered and we are putting artificial ones into orbit at a good clip. The number of satellites, nose cones, discarded wrenches, and other pieces of trash in earth orbit numbers well into the thousands.
