Did you have an affair with him or the wife? I would probably just let it go. The only reason for contact would be the hope that you could get together again.

I dont think is bad.... just to send a card and let him know that you feel bad for his lost... and it was so long ago... i really dont see nothing wrong with it is a matter of fact i think is very nice of you that you feel bad for him.. so go ahead and keep the card simple just a few lines to express your condolences and your respects and sign it that is it. good luck.
