I know this isn't really answering your question. But, $50,000 a year seems pretty good to me. I spent seven years in university to become an architect and I don't make that much. Plus, I'm earning Canadian dollars.
I think you can live quite nicely on that much money.

Hard answer to find. The best I could do was the Bureau of Labor Statistics report for 2001,2002, which indicated an average salary of $36,174. Increases occur at 1.5% approximately, so doing the math:
2005: 37,826.37
If that's the case, you make 132% of the U.S. average salary. To figure out if you're doing well though, you have to take into account other factors, such as your industry and the state you live in (also if a metro area, that will make a difference).
For example, the average salary in New York in 2002 was $46,328, much higher then the national average. The salary calculators at sites like salary.com or monster.com might help.

It's all relative. As others have said, it depends on where you live and what it costs to exist in that location. It also depends on who you are comparing yourself to (the local city, state, country, or world). By the world's standards, you are probably a top earner. On your salary, you could feed countless family's that are starving around the world.

It really depends on what state you live in. Jobs in Florida pay less than in New York. I make just under your salary and I live in Florida.

50K isnt too bad. I think that the average in the US for a single person it still something like 37K a year, so you are in the top half of earners, anyway.
