Because we'll all live in harmony, with pretty butterflies flying around and bunnies frolicking in green hills filled with daisies.

Depends on the implementation of socialism. I am in Canada, and the political climate here is quite decidedly socialist. I think you are equating socialism with communism/totalitarianism, which is really a dictatorship with a Marxist bent. A democratic socialism is actually a very successful and more equitable society, (think northern Europe), so long as that society has the will and resources to maintain the additional tax burden that is the inevitable fallout of increased governmental involvement in industry.
I think Marx's vision of the 'workers paradise' was fatally flawed, because he did not understand the intrinsic nature of what it is to be a human being, (ambition, corruption, greed - the whole host of human vices), but that is not to say that an evolved and democratic socialism is in-viable, or that a more equilateral distribution of the worlds resources will one day be a necessity if we are to survive the future.

You are looking at the wrong history. While it is true that modern western history is a complete bust as far as socialism is concerned. Many people lived in socialist societies before money became the driving force of the world and some still do.
Several Native American and African tribes lived in a social system. In fact the concept of owning land was foreign to them once upon a time. Socialism works as long as care about their fellow humans and the land. And as long as Capitalism is not there to take capitalize on the situation.

Social democracy works fine in Sweden. Free medical care for all,Free child care. Everybody has 5 weeks vacation by law. Greate unemployment benefits, no homeles people, guarantied retirement benefits and so on . Yes taxes are higher , but so what ? At least you know you get something back from the taxes you pay. Americans are tought to think that "socialism is bad" .. Is the extreme capitalistic system in the USA so good ?

Socialism is workable if it is combined with capitalism in a sensible way. Look at the improvements in America since the 1930s. Look at Western Europe.

Socialism may or may not be workable. Still, in an ideal world, no one should be left behind and that is what socialism tries to achieve. It is a noble cause and some way should be found to make it work.

I personally don't like socialism but the way capitalism is going where the big corporations has control of the government leaving the people without power to fight back tell me that at some point people will rebel against that and then will try to spread the wealth equally among them. It a horrible scene but it seems that capitalism it's creating more socialist.

it is workable..on paper..
not with the way humans are..
we are greedy..lazy,, and stupid..in general..
individuals can be selfless..for selfish reasons of course..(read the essays of Mark Twain)..hard working and smart ,,but on the whole..if you get more than a few people together.. brain power falls sharpley..mob mentality....
in as little as 10 generations we can change things..but no one wants to give up their creature comforts..or do things they think are unfair..it's hard, but not impossible, to change thousands of years of evolution..lets face it.. what works with least trouble stays unchanged..
of course my family and friends interact in a somewhat socialist form..we share tasks and rewards.. but that is because we are a small unit..too many people together.. feelings get involved..
when man can be honest with himself and others..the world will be a better place..
personally i would take a socialist government over a commercialistic one..which is by the way the one we have now..we no longer live in a capitalistic society..commercialism is how i would categorize the USA now..of course i would only like the socialist government if i was running it..
hey what can i say.. i'm American

It works in Small Country's like Norway because they have billions of $$$$ in North Sea oil.
So you visit Denmark etc and it looks OK and you think it will work in a broke back America.
Bzzzzt Wrong.
America is too large and diverse for Socialism. A good dose of totalitarian right wing military dictatorship accompanied by mass executions would be good for America.

People are tricked into believing in illusions like nation states. And then the leaders of these nation states, to stay in power, tell the people that they are pathetic, worthless, selfish, and in danger as mere individuals going about their own business.
They tell the people that as a collective, they are better. People believe this s***, no kidding.
