Most episodes of back pain are caused by muscle strain. When injured, the large muscles in the low back can become inflamed and spasm, causing low back pain and significant stiffness. Ice massage therapy can provide pain relief by slowing the inflammation and swelling that occurs after back injury and muscle strain, helping to slow the nerve impulses in the affected area.
You don't say the severity of the pain...I had back pain and ended up in the hospital having an emergency lumbar microdisectomy.
I had a herniated disc.

The answer depends on the reason for the back pain. Pain medication and muscle relaxers, etc. should be used only temporarily. Exercise may help with back pain by building up muscles if the pain is from exertion. Learning how to lift properly by using large body muscles instead of back muscles for lifting.
Problems with vertebrae or discs in the back can only be treated by a doctor or a doctors advice.

Your question is to vague to really give any advice. As others have said, you need to determine what is causing the pain before it can be treated. There are many causes of low back pain and an evaluation from your doctor should give some further details.
Ask your doctor for a referal to a physical therapist certified in the McKenzie method (www.mckenziemdt.org). If you go to the website you can put in your zip code and see who is the closest therapist to you. It is a remarkable technique which can really help you to control your pain and symptoms, without becoming reliant upon medications, chiropractors, etc.
Good luck!

Ineed I suspect that you are o.k., just out of shape, and perhaps the bike is not set up properly. It is obvious that you know little about cycling. So take you bike to a shop and have them properly fit the bike for you. That should get rid of that issue. The next issue is proper riding technique. You need to learn how to 'spin' on a bike. Spinning is the proper way top ride a bike. If you are pedaling at a slow speed, in to high / hard of a gear, you exerting unnecessary tension on your lower back. You can read about, or ask experienced riders, or ask on this forum if you know nothing about spinning! For the intrim discomfort use liquid / gel advil and a heating pad on low.... it will help a lot! Soccerref

Depending what's causing it, you should always see a doctor/chiropractor first to rule out things such as scoliosis, pulled muscle or pinched nerves. They can prescribe exercises for you. Stay away from muscle relaxers and pain pills. In the meantime, you can use a moist heat heating pad to relieve some of the pain.
