Check the fan motor fuse.
We had the same problem with my wife's car.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

How'd you figure that out?! it doesn't even have a temp gauge! Or does it have an idiot light for that?

Try a different anti-freeze blend. I use 75% water (make sure it's distilled!), 25% antifreeze. The water has much better heat exchanging properties than the antifreeze. The guys running the old Ford Flathead V8's which are notorious for overheating like to use this blend as well.

Is there possibly a blockage in the radiator or elsewhere in the cooling system? Do the electric fans come on? Or the coolant temp sensor, is it even possibly malfunctioning? Did you make sure to put the t-stat on the right direction (easy mistake to make!)?

I'm not a mechanic , but I have owned 3 VW's over the years.
They are known for running hot.
I have replaced head gaskets, water pumps, thermostats, radiators, fan switches, changed anti-freeze brands etc. The A/C sometimes caused problems. Just make sure you take it to the dealer or have a mechanic that specializes in VW's.
P.S. It's still my car of choice!!!

Check to see if cooling fan is coming on first.
