Legend has it that the Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that can not return home, and her crew, when hailed from another ship, attempt to send messages to people long dead on land.
It is real in so far as it is a long running legend, and very much predates the recent Pirates of the Carribean movie , which plays off two unrelated legends, that of Davy Jones, and the ship the Flying Dutchman.
Its origins in storytelling are disputed, but there is an English play from 1826 called The Flying Dutchman, as well as a novel from 1837 called The Phantom Ship.

A ccording to folklore The flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that can never go home. If spotted from afar it could been seen glowing a ghostly light. Or near, the crew of the ghost ship will try to send messages to people long dead. At least that what the legend says. On the other hand there is strong evidence that it's origins are based on a play named also The Flying Dutchman by Edward Fitzbal in 1826. That is what I believe. Are you asking also that pirates are real? Yes pirates were real.

Yup, and no offense, but it wouldn't be the "Flying Dutchman" if there was evidence! That's the whole point! Sightings are put to question, and eventually the person who saw it? Either insane or smacking himself on the head for "falling for a prank." It's real...
Just like the Bunnyman... Bunnyman bridge -shivers-.

I think it may have possibly been a real ship, but I have yet to do any research on it.

No proof either way exists at all, says a BBC website:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A591365
Apparently sailors are used to seeing hazy mirages of ships.
However, many people have claimed they have seen it, including a future king of England:

As for me? I sit on my sceptical fence - but "there are more things in heaven and earth..."
