Viktor Yushchenko is the president of Ukraine who was poisoned by his opposer in last year's election, and his face was disfigured. However, he still won the elections during the "orange revolution" against the fraudulent election in which Yushchenko's Russian-backed opposer won.

I might be mistaken, but I believe the more infamous case of poisening that disfigured a national leader was the leader of the Ukraine named Yushchenko
