In states with a presidential system of government, the President exercises the functions of Head of State and Head of government, i.e. he directs the Executive arm of Government. Presidents in this system are either directly elected by popular vote or indirectly elected by an electoral college.
In the USA, the President is indirectly elected by the U.S. Electoral College made up of electors chosen by voters in the presidential election. In most U.S. states, each elector is committed to voting for a specified candidate determined by the popular vote in each state, so that the people, in voting for each elector, is in effect voting for the candidate. However, in several close U.S. elections (notably 1876, 1888, 2000), while one candidate received the most popular votes, another candidate managed to win more electoral votes in the Electoral College and so won the presidency.

You can start learning by reading the Constitution as it was originally written, not as the courts have tried to re-write it. Then you can read the Oath of Office that the President elect swears to at his swearing-in ceremony, and then you can read all the U.S. history that somewhat alters the Presidential powers as time has marched forward since the acceptance of the Constitution through to 7/9/06. It's all very necessary reading since everyone, including the first responder to your question proves, has their own ideas that may not relate to reality. I have found reading material (aka: books) at Conservative Book Club.com to be helpful, as well as regular and reliable news at Washington Times newspaper. But the up-to-date, final understanding will be up to your research. You could turn this into a doctoral thesis if you're planning ahead for a college education in Government. Think about it. God Bless you.
