When I want to protect or hide my files I: Right click>new>compressed(zipped) folder>Name it>insert files>file>add a password. Then I right click the zipped folder go to properties and under attributes I mark Hidden. If you want to find the folder again go to your control panel>apperance and themes>folder options>View>Show hidden files and folders, open the file, then type your password and unzip it.

Hope this helps!

Well Im not sure if its the same in 2000 but in 97 you can do the save as option and then on the right hand side there is a button for Options. At the bottom of the screen that pops up there is the option "Password to open:" or "Password to Modify:"

When you are in MS word you can go to the menu bar select tools.. Options and then click on the security tab. From there you can set a password to open or set a password to modify.

click File>Save as

on the Save as window, click tools (just beside the *new folder and the views button)

as you click the 'tools' button, a drop down menu will appear and click 'Security Options...' the Security window will appear and type-in you password.

*this applies to all versions of microsoft office*
