I want to open a convenience type store in my town and I have no idea how to get started. I have a building in mind, it was a store about a year ago but the woman that owned it died and now her son has the building for sale. The only thing is that it needs quite a bit of work. Unfortunately the building would be all I have if I bought it. I would still have to provide all of the supplies and I have no money.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Start & Manage a Convenience Food Store Business by Jerre G. Lewis
* Start and Run a Profitable Retail Business by Jim Dion, Ted Topping
* Retail Business Kit for Dummies by Rick Segel
* Specialty Shop Retailing: How to Run Your Own Store Revised by Carol L. Schroeder
* So You Want To Own The Store: Secrets to Running a Successful Retail Operation by Mort Brown

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

The first thing you want to do is READ as much material as you can BEFORE getting into ANYTHING! If you think books are expensive, try ignorance. RESEARCH the property papers with a fine tooth comb. As far as I've read, to get into a renovation situation isn't a too good idea, unless you are turning it over for a profit. My advice, GO to the book store and get books on Buying a Property and How to start a convenience store. Good Luck. And by the way did I say LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!? By the way a good book to read is "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki. Its a great book on business and investing.

I would approach the city, tell them what you would like to do, see if there are any loans available. You will also need some property look around for property, and also grab an attorney, cause you will have to get approval from neighbors and it will require some court issues.
