I am producing the amateur pantomime in a local village hall. Resources and cash are limited...I need some inspiration! For those not familiar with the story, Aladdin is rescued from a cave by a genie, and together they fly on a magic carpet out of the cave. I need to try and replicate it!!

a prop?
use a castored cart of some sort, lower portion painted black and shiny ribbons that make the artful appearance of wind. Then use 2 other people dressed fully in black to push the cart to a choreographed destination.

Or use a real carpet section with the humor that it doesn't really fly. mime places it on the ground and does the command to make it fly. Mime must pantomime the flying actions.

Or actually fly it. if you have the ability to rig a platform to a rope track. It would be just like flying a person and all thought and care would be needed in the hanging of such a fly.

Or rigg a rolling platform with straight castors (no swivel, no smart) low to the floor with a rope at either end for someone offstage to pull in the direction needed.

All of these ideas could use a small effect of a fan that pushes air if you'd like to have the carpet ruffle.

buy a magic one silly!!!

can you afford some sort of lift type thing? platform put under rug that you can lift slightly when they're on it?

or failing that just use backgrounds that imply they are flying and put a fan infront of them so it blows their hair/

good luck mate :)

I imagine you can try to tie it with four strong robes, they are better to be transparent. Then hang it from the ceiling, when you want it to fly, pull the ropes. I am not responsible for any accidents!

how about making the scene behind the carpet move instead of the carpet itself. you could do that with projection.
